About Pump Wet Ends

Spa Pump Wet Ends & Impellers — 60 Parts In Stock

A spa pump wet end is the hydraulic half of your hot tub pump — the housing, volute, and impeller that actually move water, separated from the motor by the pump seal. When flow drops, the jet pressure disappears, or water starts weeping around the pump body, the wet end or its impeller is usually the culprit. Owners and technicians replace these components to restore full performance without swapping the entire motor assembly.

How to choose the right spa pump wet end or impeller

Getting the wrong part wastes time and money. Match on these four dimensions before ordering:

  • Frame size — 48Y vs. 56Y. This is the motor frame standard. Most single-speed and lower-horsepower pumps use a 48Y frame; higher-output pumps commonly use a 56Y frame. The wet end face-plate bolt pattern differs between the two — they are not interchangeable. Check your motor nameplate or existing wet end label first.
  • Port size and type (MBT). Our wet ends are listed with inlet × outlet measurements in Male Buttress Thread (MBT): 1-1/2" × 1-1/2" for lighter-duty applications (see 48Y 1-1/2" MBT wet end 91040840-000) or 2" × 2" for higher-flow setups (see 56Y 2" MBT wet end 310-1750). Measure your existing unions or plumbing before ordering.
  • Horsepower rating. The impeller is sized to match the motor HP exactly. Running a 2HP impeller on a 1HP motor will cavitate and overheat the motor; running an undersized impeller loses the performance gain you paid for. Cross-reference HP from your motor nameplate to the impeller listing — for example, 2HP impeller 91694200 vs. 1HP impeller 310-4220.
  • Impeller shaft dimensions — SL (shaft length) and OD (outside diameter). These two measurements confirm the impeller physically fits the motor shaft and clears the volute. Both are listed in every impeller title. Example: a 0.5HP impeller with 11/16" SL × 4" OD will not fit a shaft sized for a 1.5HP 2" SL impeller.
  • Brand compatibility. Wet ends are engineered to bolt directly onto matching brand motors. A Waterway wet end mates to a Waterway motor; a Jacuzzi wet end mates to a Jacuzzi motor. Cross-brand mounting is not supported unless the part listing explicitly states compatibility.

When in doubt, pull the existing wet end and record the part number stamped into the housing — that is always the most reliable lookup path.

Brands we carry

  • Aqua-Flo by Gecko — one of the most widely installed wet end families in North America; known for robust 48Y and 56Y housings with consistent port dimensions.
  • Gecko Alliance — control-system leader that also supplies matched wet-end assemblies for their integrated pump platforms.
  • Jacuzzi — OEM wet ends designed to exact fitment specifications for Jacuzzi branded spas; not universally cross-compatible with aftermarket frames.
  • LX — a widely used aftermarket-friendly brand with strong availability across horsepower ranges.
  • Sta-Rite — commercial-grade build quality; popular in older installations that are still running strong.
  • Sundance Spas — OEM-spec parts for Sundance models; confirm your model year before ordering.
  • Vico — compact, high-efficiency wet ends frequently found in European-origin hot tub brands sold in the US.
  • Waterway — broad catalog covering 48Y and 56Y frames with 1-1/2" through 2-1/2" MBT ports; excellent parts availability.

Common problems this part solves

  • Weak or no jet pressure. A cracked volute or worn impeller reduces flow dramatically even when the motor runs. Replacing the wet end or impeller restores rated GPM output.
  • Water leaking around the pump body. Leaks at the wet-end housing are often traced to a failed pump seal or a cracked volute. If the seal is the source, see our guide on spa pump seal leaks — signs and replacement before ordering parts.
  • Loud grinding or rattling from the pump. Debris ingestion or bearing-related vibration can crack or chip an impeller. Inspect the impeller first — it is far less expensive than a full pump replacement.
  • Motor runs but no water movement. A seized or broken impeller spins free on the shaft without moving water. Confirm the impeller is intact and properly threaded before condemning the motor.
  • Persistent low-flow fault codes. Many spa controllers display a flow or pressure error when the wet end can no longer sustain minimum GPM through the heater. Restoring the wet end often clears these faults without replacing the control system.

Frequently asked questions

Can I replace just the impeller instead of the entire wet end?

Yes — if the volute housing and diffuser are undamaged, replacing only the impeller is the correct repair and costs significantly less. Remove the wet end from the motor, unthread the impeller from the shaft (it is typically left-hand threaded), and install the new impeller with the matching SL and OD dimensions. Replace the full wet end when the housing is cracked or the diffuser is broken.

Is a 48Y wet end compatible with a 56Y motor?

No. The 48Y and 56Y designations refer to NEMA motor frame standards with different face-bolt patterns and shaft protrusion lengths. A 48Y wet end will not bolt securely onto a 56Y motor, and vice versa. Always match the frame size stamped on your motor to the wet end listing.

What does MBT mean on a wet end port size?

MBT stands for Male Buttress Thread — the external threaded fitting that accepts a standard spa union. A 2" MBT port pairs with a 2" spa union. If your plumbing uses 1-1/2" unions, you need a 1-1/2" MBT wet end. Mismatching port sizes means your unions will not seal correctly.

How do I know if the wet end or the motor needs to be replaced?

Disconnect the wet end from the motor and try spinning the motor shaft by hand — it should turn smoothly with slight resistance. If the shaft is locked or the motor hums without turning, the motor is the problem. If the shaft spins freely but no water moves when energized, inspect the impeller inside the wet end. Visible cracks, broken vanes, or a stripped shaft bore mean the wet end or impeller needs replacement, not the motor.

Do I need to replace the pump seal when I install a new wet end?

It is strongly recommended. The mechanical seal lives at the interface between the wet end and the motor. Any time you separate these two components, the seal is disturbed and its service life is effectively reset to zero. Installing a new seal at the same time prevents a callback leak repair within months. See our article on spa pump seal leaks and replacement for step-by-step guidance.

What horsepower impeller fits a 2-speed pump?

Two-speed pumps carry a single HP rating on the nameplate — the impeller is sized to that rated HP regardless of speed settings. Order the impeller that matches the nameplate HP exactly. The two-speed function is handled by the motor windings, not the impeller size.
