Error Code
HFL error code — Balboa spa
Always cut power at the breaker before opening the spa pack or touching wiring. Spa equipment runs at 120/240V and can be lethal. If you are unsure, hire a licensed spa technician.
HFL is the most misdiagnosed Balboa code. It reads like a heater fault, but it almost always traces to the filter, pressure switch or circulation pump — the heater is just the component that noticed. Work the flow chain cheap-to-expensive before touching the heater.
What HFL means
Heater Flow Loss — the heater is on but no water flow was detected.
Diagnose in order
- Pull and inspect the filter cartridge — a clogged filter is the most common cause by far
- Bleed any air lock at the pump union until water runs steady
- Test the pressure/flow switch — a $15–30 part and an easy DIY swap
- Verify every diverter valve is fully open
- Listen to the circulation pump — humming with weak jet flow means it's failing
- Only then suspect the heater — a heater replaced on top of a flow problem fails again in weeks
