About Plumbing & Seals

Hot Tub Gaskets, Unions & Plumbing Seals

A hot tub gasket or plumbing seal is the first line of defense between pressurized water and your cabinet, equipment bay, and surrounding structure. Owners and technicians reach for these parts when a union joint weeps, a heater manifold drips, or a pump face seal fails. With over 60 union fittings, tailpieces, adapter plates, and related plumbing components from the industry's most trusted brands, this collection covers the most common wet-side repairs on the market today.

How to choose the right hot tub gasket or union fitting

Getting the right part comes down to four things. Nail all four and the repair holds; miss one and you're ordering again.

  • Pipe diameter and connection type. Most spa plumbing runs 1½" or 2" pipe. Check whether your union is slip (glue-in) or threaded, then match it exactly. For example, the 1-1/2" x 1-1/2" Union 461257 and the Pump Union Tailpiece 2" Slip 50103020 serve different pipe sizes and connection styles — they are not interchangeable.
  • Component location. Pump unions (400-4230, 400-5570, 400-5990, 400-6010) seal the wet end to the pump volute. Heater union tailpieces (42-2373-K, 0050107020-SH) connect the heater manifold and carry a different O-ring profile. Never substitute one for the other.
  • Brand and OEM match. Many unions look identical but carry brand-specific O-ring grooves or thread pitches. Cross-reference your spa's brand (Balboa, Waterway, Sundance, HydroQuip, etc.) against the part's listed vendor to confirm compatibility before ordering.
  • Tailpiece length and heater split nuts. A tailpiece that is too short won't compress the O-ring. Measure the existing tailpiece end-to-end. The Heater Split Nut 415-4051 and the 3" Tailpiece 42-2390 are sized for specific heater manifold depths — confirm your manifold model first.

Brands we carry

  • Waterway — One of the largest OEM suppliers of spa plumbing components; unions and tailpieces from Waterway are found in hundreds of spa brands worldwide.
  • Balboa — Industry-standard controls manufacturer whose heater manifolds and plumbing adapters set the benchmark for compatibility.
  • Aqua-Flo by Gecko — Known for high-flow pump designs; their union fittings are precision-matched to Aqua-Flo wet ends.
  • Gecko Alliance — Controls and sensor ecosystem; the Tee Fitting Temp Sensor 6600-173 integrates directly with Gecko topside systems.
  • HydroQuip — Reliable heater and plumbing hardware built to OEM specs for a broad range of spa manufacturers.
  • Hydro Air — Specializes in jet and air-system fittings including light wall fittings and lens assemblies.
  • Magic Plastics — Durable injection-molded plumbing fittings trusted for longevity in corrosive spa water chemistry.
  • Sundance Spas / Hot Spring Spas — OEM parts for their respective proprietary plumbing layouts, ensuring exact-fit replacement.
  • Dreammaker Spas, LX, Valterra, J&J Electronics — Rounding out the catalog with specialty adapters, drain fittings, and lighting system connectors.

Common problems this part solves

Most plumbing seal and union calls trace back to a handful of recognizable symptoms:

  • Water pooling under the cabinet or around the equipment bay. A cracked or worn union O-ring is the most frequent cause. See our guide on why your hot tub is leaking from the bottom for a step-by-step diagnosis.
  • Weeping at the pump inlet or outlet. When the pump union O-ring hardens or deforms, you'll see a steady drip at the wet-end connection. Our article on spa pump seal leak — signs and replacement walks through identification and the repair process.
  • Weak or uneven jet pressure. Air ingestion from a leaking union on the suction side drops flow to the pump and kills jet performance. Read why your hot tub jets are weak to confirm whether a plumbing seal is the culprit before replacing the pump.
  • Heater flow errors (e.g., persistent low-flow or pressure-switch faults). A partially failed heater union tailpiece can restrict flow enough to trigger flow-sensor errors without an obvious external drip.

Frequently asked questions

Can I replace just the O-ring, or do I need the whole union assembly?

If the union body and nut are structurally sound and the threads are clean, replacing the O-ring alone often resolves the leak. However, if the union shows cracks, UV degradation, or stripped threads, replace the full assembly. Unions are inexpensive insurance — a failed union body under pressure can cause far more water damage than the cost of a new fitting.

What's the difference between a union tailpiece and a union nut?

The tailpiece is the barbed or slip-end piece that glues or threads into the plumbing. The union nut (sometimes called a split nut) threads over the tailpiece and compresses the O-ring against the mating face — such as a pump wet end or heater manifold port. Both parts must be present and undamaged for a leak-free seal. The Heater Split Nut 415-4051 is an example of a nut-only replacement part.

Do pump unions from different brands fit each other?

Thread pitch and O-ring groove dimensions vary between manufacturers. A Waterway union nut will generally not seal properly on an Aqua-Flo tailpiece, even if it appears to thread on. Always match the union nut and tailpiece to the same brand and part family, or use a verified cross-reference before mixing components.

How do I know what size union my spa uses?

Measure the outside diameter of the pipe entering the union — 1½" pipe OD is approximately 1.9" and 2" pipe OD is approximately 2.375". You can also check your spa's original equipment manual or the existing part number stamped on the union body. When in doubt, photograph the old part next to a ruler and contact us before ordering.

How often should spa unions and seals be replaced?

There is no fixed service interval, but O-rings and union seals typically last 5–10 years depending on water chemistry, UV exposure, and thermal cycling. Inspect them during every drain-and-refill service. Hard, cracked, or flattened O-rings should be replaced immediately — they will not re-seal once compressed water forces past them.

Can I use plumber's silicone grease on spa O-rings?

Yes — a thin coat of silicone-based O-ring lubricant (not petroleum-based grease, which degrades rubber) eases installation and extends O-ring life by preventing dry cracking. Apply sparingly to the O-ring itself, not to the seating surface.
